● TITLE: A study of myoelectric signals for arm prosthesis control
● AUTHORS: Bousso, D., Ishai, G.
● SOURCE: Bio Medical Engineering, v. 6, No. 11 (1971).
● ABSTRACT: An artificial arm capable of performing several different movements requires a means of control. One possible method is to use the myoelectric signals produced by the contraction of existing muscles in the patient's body. The authors investigate the feasibility of using a single muscle to give two commands-`on' or `off'-depending on its signal level. An apparatus was built for controlling a gas-powered prosthesis by commands through a two-signal level control system. Twelve muscle sites were found to be usable, and subjects easily learned how to produce the two signal levels voluntarily.
